Dubai residents send relief to Sri Lanka

Dubai has once again shown that when the community needs support, this city doesn’t think twice about stepping up.

After Sri Lanka was hit by one of its most devastating natural disasters last week, UAE residents showed up in a massive way

The island nation was hit by massive floods and landslides after Cyclone Ditwah, leaving at least 355 people dead, 366 missing, and more than a million residents affected. Entire communities have been displaced, and families are still trying to piece their lives back together after the devastation.

Dubai steps in to help

A Sri Lankan resident in Dubai, Ashen Senarathna, went live on social media to raise awareness about what was happening back home and announced a donation drive. Emphasizing that “every small contribution matters,” he urged people to come together and support the families in need. And within minutes, the response exploded.

Crowds showed up. Families lined up. Strangers turned into volunteers. Boxes were packed and prepped to send home.
The community heard the call — and they delivered.

“With one live video, we collected 35 tonnes of aid”

Thirty-five TONNES — all from one single call-out. If that doesn’t shout “Dubai community spirit,” nothing will.

From food and clothes to essentials for kids and families, the wave of support turned into one of the most heart-warming moments we’ve seen in a long time.

Dubai to Sri Lanka — sending strength, love, and hope.
And to everyone who donated, packed, carried, organized, or even just shared the message… you’ve genuinely made a world of difference.
