Thinking of heading to Nepal soon—especially Kathmandu? You might wanna pump the brakes and double-check your flight details.
There’s major chaos unfolding right now. Nepal’s been swept up in massive, youth-driven protests, now being called the “Gen Z Protests.” These nationwide rallies, led by fired-up young voices, have escalated to the point where Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu is shut down until further notice.
Earlier this Tuesday, a Flydubai flight to Kathmandu was diverted to India’s Lucknow after the Tribhuvan International Airport was reportedly closed down.
Flydubai has confirmed that Flight FZ539, which departed Dubai on September 9, was diverted mid-route. A spokesperson told Gulf News that all remaining flights to Kathmandu were cancelled, and passengers from FZ539 were flown back to Dubai later the same day.

So yeah… if Nepal’s on your travel radar, make sure you’re staying in the loop on protest updates and any flight disruptions.
As to… what’s going on in Nepal?
In short: a full-on youth uprising against corruption.
Nepal’s youth are hitting the streets, fired up over government corruption, rising unemployment, and a recent social media ban that poured fuel on the fire.
Earlier this month, the Nepali government pulled the plug on 26 major platforms — including Facebook, YouTube, and X — after viral online campaigns started gaining serious traction.
The ban hit Nepal’s Gen Z hard — a generation that depends on social media for news, expression, and activism. While public pressure pushed the government to reverse the ban, the damage was done. The youth didn’t back down — they took their online anti-corruption movement offline and into the streets. The protests turned intense, leading to clashes that tragically claimed 19 lives and left over 100 injured.
