The countdown has begun…
Less than a year after Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi safely returned to Earth on September 4, 2023, the UAE is already gearing up for its next space mission: the MBZ-SAT.
The UAE has recently stepped up its efforts in the realm of space exploration. This mission is especially significant as it marks the historic journey of Nora Al Matrooshi, the first Emirati female astronaut, into space — truly a monumental leap for womankind.
She will be accompanied by Emirati astronaut Mohammad Al Mulla – another shining star in this groundbreaking mission.
The next giant leap for the UAE
In July 2024, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, met with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) team at Union House in Dubai. Astronauts Nora Al Matrooshi and Mohammad Al Mulla were also in attendance.
The Ruler of Dubai was briefed on the MBZ-SAT, the most advanced satellite in the region and the second satellite developed entirely by an Emirati team. The briefing covered the ongoing testing phase, which includes critical environmental tests to ensure the satellite’s durability and performance in space.
The team confirmed that once this phase is completed, they will begin final launch preparations. Currently, the scheduled launch is set for no earlier than October 2024 aboard a SpaceX rocket.
During their discussion with Sheikh Mohammed, Al Matrooshi and Al Mulla provided updates on their preparations for upcoming space missions. They also briefed the Dubai Ruler on the latest advancements within the UAE Astronaut Programme and its significant role in inspiring the next generation of space explorers.
Sheikh Mohammed commended the MBRSC team for their efforts and contributions to advancing the UAE’s position in space technology. He encouraged them to persist in their pursuit of excellence and to continue striving for the highest standards in this critical field.
Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Board of Directors of MBRSC, expressed, “We take pride in our work on the most advanced satellite in the Arab world, named after the President of the UAE. We have ambitious goals for our nation in the future of space exploration, and we are committed to achieving milestones that enhance its global leadership in this field.”
What is the MBZ-SAT?
The MBZ-SAT will stand as the most advanced commercial satellite in the region for high-resolution satellite imagery, featuring a sophisticated system for continuous image acquisition and processing around the clock.
The project aims to enhance the UAE’s collaborations in the space industry by meeting the increasing demand for satellite imagery. According to the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, “The imagery solution can serve a wide range of applications including mapping and analysis, environmental monitoring, navigation, infrastructure management, and disaster relief efforts.” Satellite imagery plays a crucial role in assessing the impact of natural disasters, aiding in relief planning, and supporting reconstruction efforts.
