 What Fines Can You Get While Driving?

The Dubai Police Awareness Department is actively educating drivers on the importance of maintaining a safe following distance, with fines reaching up to AED 400 for violations. The advanced systems in use are designed not just to issue fines but to enhance the safety of all road users. While many drivers slow down near known radar locations, the main goal is to promote consistent and safe driving throughout the city.

Not wearing a seatbelt can cost you AED 400 and earn you 4 black points, while using a handheld phone while driving could result in a AED 800 fine and 4 black points. The new silent radars will accurately capture these types of behavioral violations on the road. While the exact timeline for when these radars will be active hasn’t been disclosed, Dubai Police assures that all fines are thoroughly reviewed before being issued. Salma Mohammed Rashed Almarri, head of the Traffic Awareness section, stated, “We always verify fines with video footage, especially for behavioral offenses like phone use and seatbelt violations.”

What Can Silent Radars Detect?

Hassan Ali Taleb Alhamer from the Traffic Technology Department pointed out that these radars do more than just detect speeding. They also capture illegal U-turns and other traffic infractions. Dubai’s roads are equipped with cutting-edge traffic control technologies that monitor mobile phone usage, seatbelt violations, and more. These radars can oversee up to six main lanes on a highway and two side lanes, read license plates, and identify if they are obscured. They can even detect violations if a vehicle is partially hidden by another.

Pedestrian Safety is a Top Priority

Officer Salma also emphasized the crucial need to come to a complete stop at pedestrian crossings. While it might be frustrating to stop for multiple pedestrians, remember that at a zebra crossing, pedestrians have the right of way. Fines for failing to yield or driving on the zebra crossing while pedestrians are crossing can be as high as AED 500!
