The new trio? Reposts, Friend Map, and a ‘Friends’ feed right inside the Reels tab.

Right after the update dropped, users started sounding the alarm over Instagram’s new Location-Sharing feature. Basically, your location can be tracked based on the last time you posted or even just opened the app.
People got pretty sus about it and took to Threads (Meta’s other platform) to call out Meta for the sketchy move.
A bunch of users were actually vibing with the new feature, saying you can just switch it off—no big deal, no need to freak out.
But then others pushed back, pointing out that the option was turned on by default on their accounts.
Before things blew up, Mosseri stepped in to calm the waters.
Meta explained that when users tap the map, it only shows the location of people who’ve actively opted in to share their info. They added, “We’re double-checking everything to ensure no one’s location is shared without clear, explicit consent — which actually requires a double opt-in by design.”
