This popular neighbourhood in Dubai has banned e-scooters and e-bikes

Put the brakes on…

E-scooters and e-bikes are trending across Dubai and the UAE. But as their popularity rises, so do the regulations. If you’re a fan of this convenient mode of transport, heads up—a well-known Dubai neighborhood has just banned them.

Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) is prioritizing the safety of its residents and visitors by banning e-scooters and e-bikes. Dubai Community Management confirmed the news to Khaleej Times, explaining that the decision was made to reduce accidents and maintain a safe environment.

Notices have been posted throughout the area, restricting e-scooters and e-bikes on the ground and plaza levels of The Walk.

However, JBR isn’t the first place to hit the brakes on e-scooters and e-bikes.

In July 2024, Dubai Police confiscated 640 vehicles due to violations. The officers have been closely monitoring two-wheeled commuters and, to put it bluntly, have penalized those who didn’t follow the rules, engaged in reckless riding, or broke regulations by taking away their rides.

E-scooters have also been banned on Dubai’s metro and tram services. A post on RTA’s social media platform, X, announced that the ban was implemented to ensure the safety of public transport users.

If you don’t want to have your ride taken away, you’re probably wondering…

What are the rules for using scooters in Dubai?

You can find a comprehensive list of the current rules and regulations for scooter use on the RTA website, including technical requirements and permitted locations. However, here are some of the key regulations you should be aware of:

  • Permit: Riders must apply for a permit through the RTA website.
  • Safe Driving: Avoid reckless driving that endangers others.
  • Speed Limits: Adhere to speed limits, generally between 15 to 20 km/h.
  • No Imbalance: Do not carry items or passengers that could destabilize the e-scooter.
  • Pedestrian Crossings: Dismount when crossing pedestrian crossings.
  • Age Requirement: Use e-scooters individually, and riders must be at least 16 years old.
  • Designated Lanes: Stick to designated or shared lanes; avoid riding outside these areas.
  • Headsets: Avoid using dual headsets or headphones while riding.
  • Track Compliance: Ride on designated tracks, follow traffic instructions, regulations, and warning signs.
  • Safe Distance: Maintain a safe distance from other e-scooters, bikes, and pedestrians.
