Travelling In The UAE? Rules For Carrying Cash, Jewellery & Prohibited Items

Visiting Dubai for the first time is thrilling, with endless things to explore and enjoy. However, you definitely don’t want to be held up at the airport for violations when you’re so close to your dream vacation. To ensure your trip goes smoothly, make sure you’re familiar with UAE travel rules. Join me as I cover everything you need to know about bringing cash, jewelry, prohibited items, and other valuables in and out of the UAE.

Declare Your Valuables At DXB

If you’re carrying over AED 60,000 in cash or its equivalent in other currencies, financial instruments, precious metals (including gold and silver), or valuable stones (such as jewelry), you need to declare it. You can make this declaration to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Ports Security (ICP) through their official website or the Afseh app, available on Google Play and the App Store. For travelers under 18, any cash they bring into the UAE will count towards the limit of their accompanying parent or guardian.

Penalties For Non-Compliance

Failing to declare these amounts, hiding information, or giving incorrect details can lead to imprisonment, fines, or both. The court may also order the seizure of any undeclared funds.

Prohibited & Restricted Items

Knowing which items are prohibited or restricted when traveling to the UAE is crucial. Prohibited items include:

  • Narcotics
  • Gambling tools
  • Nylon fishing nets
  • Live pigs
  • Raw ivory
  • Laser pens with red light packaging
  • Fake currency
  • Contaminated substances
  • Offensive publications or drawings
  • Paan substances, betel
  • Publications contradicting Islamic teachings
  • Black magic items

Limits On Gifts & Consumables

When bringing in gifts, their total value should not exceed AED 3,000. You’re allowed to bring up to 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or 500 grams of tobacco products. For alcoholic beverages, the limit is 4 liters or 2 cartons of beer (24 cans per carton). Note that these limits do not apply to travelers under 18, as they are not permitted to bring alcohol.

Duty-Free Items

Certain items can be brought into the UAE duty-free. These include:

  • Telescopes
  • Movie projectors
  • Radios
  • CD players
  • Video and digital cameras
  • Portable music instruments
  • Personal sports equipment
  • Portable computers
  • Strollers
  • Wheelchairs
  • Medication for personal use
  • Personal Jewellery

Final Tips

Understanding these regulations will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience in and out of the UAE. Be prepared, declare your valuables, and familiarize yourself with the rules to avoid any penalties. Safe travels!
