Why Eid Al Etihad has replaced National Day

Why Eid Al Etihad has replaced National Day

The name might be different, but the vibe is still the same…

What’s in a name? A knafeh chocolate by any other name would still taste just as amazing. Take “Gungey Slab Snax,” for instance. Terrible branding – but it still delivers those sweet, irresistible vibes.

It’s the same with public holidays. On December 2, the UAE marks the anniversary of its founding. On this day in 1971, the young nation declared its independence. A union of emirates, emerging from the Trucial States of a British Protectorate, but with a rich human history that stretches way beyond its borders, going back to times long before European settlers ever arrived.

Every year on that day, the country observes a public holiday, once called UAE National Day. But for its residents and citizens, it’s so much more than just a day off. It’s a time to appreciate this land of opportunity and safety, to celebrate the union’s spirit, honor UAE’s rich heritage, and reflect on the founding values – like tolerance, hospitality, strength, generosity, and unity.

Re: Union

Regarding Union, the value of ‘unity’ took center stage in 2023 with a rebrand for the country’s 52nd anniversary. What was once called UAE National Day became UAE Union Day. While the essence of the celebration stayed the same, the new name offered a clearer reflection of what’s being honored. It’s not just about national pride, but about the unity of its emirates and its people.

Eid Al Etihad

Now, in 2024, December 2 has evolved into its final form. What was once National Day, then Union Day, is now Eid Al Etihad – a name that embraces authentic Arabic language and truly reflects the heart of what the day represents.

What does Eid Al Etihad mean?

Eid Al Etihad translates to the festival (or celebration) of the Union – a powerful call to raise those UAE flags high.

Will we get a public holiday for Eid Al Etihad?

Yes, the UAE Cabinet resolution that outlines the calendar for public and private holidays has designated two days to celebrate the occasion, falling on December 2 and 3, a Monday and Tuesday. For those with weekends off (sorry, service industry), this means a four-day weekend to enjoy.

Will there be fireworks for Eid Al Etihad 2024?

If you’re hoping to catch the Eid Al Etihad fireworks in Dubai, you’re in luck – they’ll be lighting up the sky on both Monday, December 2, and Tuesday, December 3, across four locations: JBR Beach, Al Seef, Hatta, and Dubai Festival City Mall. The exact timings are yet to be confirmed. At Dubai Festival City Mall, the fireworks will be paired with the daily IMAGINE light and laser show, a vibrant spectacle that lights up the waters at Festival City every evening.

You can also catch fireworks in Dubai at Global Village, with displays happening every night at 9 PM from Friday, November 29, to Tuesday, December 3. Typically, Global Village lights up the sky with fireworks on Fridays and Saturdays, and the National Day weekend will follow suit with even more spectacular shows.

What’s new for Eid Al Etihad 53 (2024)?

For the big weekend, the Union Day committee has recently announced that there will be Eid Al Etihad Zones set up across all seven emirates on December 2. More details on the locations and what’s included will be shared soon.

What do the Eid Al Etihad holidays look like for 2025?

The 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations will feature another two-day public and private holiday. We’ll have December 2 and 3 (Tuesday and Wednesday) off to honor Commemoration Day and celebrate Eid Al Etihad.
