Social media pages on Instagram and Facebook attempting to sell drugs are being taken down.
The social media pages claim to sell cannabis and other drugs to buyers in the UAE. These pages use coded language like “w33d,” “thc oil,” and “h@sh” to disguise the drug names, while offering an ‘anonymous payment system’—reportedly operating in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.
The symbols in these pages’ bios are used to bypass quick searches by social media platforms and law enforcement.
A spokesperson from Facebook told The National that as soon as such content is spotted, whether through community reports or other methods, it is promptly removed. The public is encouraged to report any similar pages they come across in the future.
