The house always Wynns…
Last year, we learned that the UAE is establishing a governmental body to develop and manage regulations for commercial gaming. With some newly released images of the venture, it’s the perfect moment to ‘slot’ together what we know about the only confirmed casino in the region so far: Wynn Al Marjan Island.
Where in the UAE is Wynn Al Marjan Island?
You’ve likely already made the smart assumption that Wynn Al Marjan Island is set to rise on Al Marjan Island. But just in case you’re not familiar with this part of the UAE, here’s a quick fact file. Al Marjan is located at the Ajman/Sharjah end of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), roughly an hour’s drive from Downtown Dubai. This stunning destination comprises a network of four interconnected man-made islands, crafted from 2.7 million square meters of reclaimed sand.
Interestingly, this will be Wynn Resorts’ first beachfront property.
When can we expect to visit Wynn Al Marjan Island?
First announced in January 2022, Wynn Al Marjan Island will mark the brand’s debut in the Middle East when it opens its doors in early 2027.
Construction is already in progress, as highlighted in the Wynn Resorts, Limited Reports for the second quarter of 2023 (released on August 9). Craig Billings, CEO of Wynn Resorts, Limited, stated: “We are thrilled to have started construction on Wynn Al Marjan Island, which we believe will become a ‘must-see’ tourism destination in the UAE.”
Will there be gaming at Wynn Al Marjan Island?
It certainly appears that way. Wynn Resorts CEO Craig Billings even mentioned that the casino component is “shaping up to be somewhat larger than Wynn Las Vegas” during an earnings call in September 2022. Combined with the UAE’s new board tasked with establishing the regulatory framework for commercial gaming, and the resort’s own description highlighting features like “a gaming area,” it’s safe to assume the answer is a resounding yes.
In May 2024, a statement from Wynn Resorts indicated that it is expected to be the first integrated gaming resort in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region.
Who are the key players in the leadership team
On September 10, 2024, Tom Roelens, the former managing director of Atlantis Dubai, was confirmed as the project’s COO. He joins President Max Tappeiner and EVP David Patent in leading the Wynn Al Marjan Island project.
How big will Wynn Al Marjan Island be?
Massive indeed! The tower at Wynn Al Marjan Island will soar to an impressive height of 300 meters above sea level, making it a remarkable addition to the island. For perspective, the tallest building on Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Tower, stands at 240 meters, offering absolutely mesmerizing views.
Inside this towering leisure monolith, we can anticipate an extraordinary vacation destination featuring 1,542 rooms and suites, along with 22 exclusive private villas.
How much will it cost to build?
Estimates put the cost of the project at USD3.9 billion (Dhs14.32 billion).
What sort of entertainment can we expect at Wynn Al Marjan Island?
In addition to the gaming experience, entertainment at Wynn Al Marjan Island will include a theater hosting unique productions (hello, Britney!), daily light and laser shows, indulgent spa and wellness offerings, and five-star spa services. Plus, there will be ample opportunities for luxury-brand shopping.
What dining experiences await at Wynn Al Marjan Island?
While specific food and beverage partners for the resort have yet to be announced, projections indicate that Wynn Al Marjan Island will feature an impressive portfolio of “22 dining and lounge experiences.”
The culinary aspect is a significant part of Wynn’s identity as a hospitality icon. The Las Vegas resort is famous for its world-renowned breakfast buffet and boasts 10 exquisite fine dining restaurants, including Cipriani, Sinatra, Mizumi, Wing Lei, SW Steakhouse, and Sarah Thompson’s Casa Playa. Many of these acclaimed dining experiences can also be found at the Wynn location in Macau.
So, it isn’t far-fetched to imagine that we might see a Mizumi or Wing Lei at Wynn Al Marjan Island. Of course, these details are still awaiting confirmation. Bring on 2027!
