UAE: Brightest Supermoon Of The Year To Be Visible This Week

This October promises to be an exhilarating month for stargazers in the UAE, with two amazing celestial events on the horizon! The Hunter’s Moon, the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year, will light up the skies on Thursday, October 17th. And that’s not all—there’s also a rare comet to catch! But first, let’s explore what makes this supermoon so special and whether you can see it with the naked eye!

What Is The Hunter Supermoon?

The Hunter Supermoon, often referred to as the Hunter’s Moon, has a rich historical background, named for the period when hunters were most active as autumn approached. This year’s Hunter Supermoon is especially noteworthy. According to the BBC’s Sky at Night Magazine, it will be the brightest, largest, and fullest moon we’ll see all year. This spectacular display occurs because the moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, a phase known as ‘Perigee.’

Can You See It With the Naked Eye?

This moon will be the second-to-last supermoon of the year, with one more coming in mid-November. So, if you miss October’s supermoon, don’t sweat it—you’ll have another chance next month, though it won’t be quite as bright. But really, there’s no excuse to miss the brightest supermoon of the year—it’s called ‘brightest’ for a reason! All you need to do is look up. Whether you’re driving, chilling at home, or hanging out at a restaurant with friends, just remember to check the sky, and you’ll definitely spot the Hunter’s Moon with your own eyes!

A Guided Experience for Stargazing and Moon Watching

If you’re after a deeper experience, I’ve got some exciting news! The Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting an amazing lunar event on Thursday, October 17th, perfect for catching the best view of the moon. Taking place at The University of Dubai, experts will guide you through this celestial phenomenon. Plus, you’ll have access to telescopes for an up-close look at the moon in all its glory. The event fee ranges from AED 40 to AED 80. It kicks off at 6:30 PM, with the main telescope observations of the supermoon starting at 8 PM.

What Else Is Happening in the Sky This Month?

As I mentioned, October is a thrilling month for space lovers in the UAE. Not only will you get to witness the brightest supermoon of the year, but you’ll also have the chance to see one of the rarest comets—Comet C/2023 A3. This comet zooms past Earth only once every 30,000 years, making this sighting a BIG deal! UAE residents can catch a glimpse on Saturday, October 19th, just a few days after the supermoon. So, get your 4X4 ready; it looks like you’ll be making a few trips out to the desert this week!
