Dubai is about to undergo a major transformation with a new AED 600 million road project aimed at tackling traffic congestion. This initiative hopes to cut travel times by an incredible 75%, reducing a typical 20-minute drive to just FIVE minutes. Join me as I break down all the areas the RTA is focusing on with this exciting new road project!
Boosting Connectivity Throughout Dubai
The Dubai RTA is leading this initiative as part of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development. The primary aim is to improve connectivity between Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Road via Al Nawras Street. Additionally, new exits will be added to both Oud Metha and Al Nawras Streets, simplifying navigation. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA, emphasizes that this project is essential for supporting a growing population—over 420,000 people are expected to reside in this area by 2030.
What’s Included in the Plan?
Major Upgrades: The project will feature the construction of four key intersections, 4,300 meters of bridges, and an impressive 14 kilometers of new roads.
Key Areas Served: This development will enhance access for neighborhoods like Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha, and Umm Hurair, as well as key locations such as Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club.
Key Changes to Anticipate
Vehicle capacity on Oud Metha Street will rise from 10,400 to 15,600 cars per hour—an impressive 50% increase! This upgrade will reduce travel times on this bustling route to just 5 minutes. Additional improvements at intersections include:
Oud Metha and Sheikh Rashid Intersection: A new left-turn lane will boost capacity to 1,800 cars per hour. Upgrades to the service road will enhance safety and alleviate congestion.
Oud Metha with Al Asayel and Al Nawras: Two new bridges will link Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road, allowing for 2,400 and 3,600 cars per hour, respectively. A dedicated bridge for left turns onto Oud Metha Street will also be constructed. Additionally, a new tunnel will be built to manage traffic from Dubai-Al Ain Road to Al Nawras Street, accommodating up to 1,200 cars per hour.
Al Nawras and Al Khail Intersection: A two-lane bridge will support 3,000 cars per hour traveling from Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road. The existing bridge on Al Khail Road will be widened from two to three lanes, boosting its capacity from 2,200 to 3,300 cars per hour.
Zabeel Palace Street Intersection: A new lane will double the capacity for left turns from Al Khail Road to the Dubai-Al Ain Road, increasing it from 900 to 1,800 cars per hour.
With these exciting upgrades coming soon, drivers in Dubai can look forward to smoother commutes and a significant reduction in time spent in traffic
